SitApp User Guide

Everything you need to set SitApp up, teach the Droid your posture, and get alerts you can trust.

1. First-time setup

The first time you open SitApp, the Droid (the app's little robot) walks you through a few screens:

  1. Welcome. Press Let's get started. Pressing it accepts the terms of use.
  2. Camera permission. The Your Droid Needs to See You screen explains why the app needs your camera. Press Continue, then Allow on your system's prompt.
Your image never leaves your computer: the app only works out the position of a few points on your body and discards the image straight away.
  3. If you declined by mistake, turn it on in your system's privacy settings (Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera; Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera).

2. Teaching the Droid your posture

The Droid learns by comparing how you sit well with how you slouch. This is the step that matters most: get it right and the alerts will be accurate.

Step 1: good posture

  1. Sit up comfortably, the way you want to sit while you work, facing your main screen. Make sure the camera can see you.
  2. Press Capture good posture.
  3. Hold it through the 3-second countdown.
  4. If you use more than one screen, the app then asks you to Look at your other screen while holding the same posture.
  5. When you see Good posture captured!, press Train Slouching.

Step 2: how you slouch

  1. When you see Now slouch!, slouch the way you really do when you're tired: head forward, rounded shoulders, slumped back, or leaning to one side.
  2. Hold still. The Droid spots it on its own, counts down 3 seconds, then captures.
  3. If it doesn't, press Capture slouch now while you're still slouching.
  4. You can add up to 5 different slouches with Add Another Slouch. One or two is usually enough.
  5. Press Finish Training.

If you see The Droid couldn't see you clearly, the camera can't see you well: move closer, improve the lighting or centre yourself in the frame, and try again.

Step 3: the test run

Press See it in action. The app asks you to sit up straight, then slouch, to check it can catch you. Follow the Next, Continue and Got it buttons.

After that you can switch on Start SitApp when I log in and Take regular breaks. Both are optional. Finally, press Launch My Droid or Go to my dashboard.

3. Using SitApp day to day

You don't need to watch the app while you work. Close the window, or use the eye icon (Hide - keeps monitoring) in the mini window. SitApp keeps watching in the background and only appears when you slouch.

4. When you slouch

Prefer pictures to words? Use Glanceable nudges

By default the Droid's nudges are a short sentence. Switch them to a picture of the posture plus a two-word label: Settings → Alerts & Nudges → The Droid, then set Nudge wording to Glanceable. Each picture shows what to fix:

Forward head

Hunched shoulders

5. If alerts feel wrong: recalibrate

If you change chair, desk or room, or move your laptop, the Droid needs to learn again. The same goes if alerts come when you're sitting well, or never come at all.

6. Useful settings

Open Settings from the app or the menu bar icon.
